West Park is located approximately twenty minutes from downtown, accessible by Interstates 90, 71 and 480. Exit I-90 from the West 140th or Warren Road exits and turn to the south to West Park. I-71 has West Park exits at West 130th Street or West 150th Street and I-480 at Grayton Road. The area is also very accessible by public transportation via the number 22 bus line or the Trisket, West Park or Puritas Rapid Transit Stations.
The name West Park comes from the former property owner in the area named Benjamin West. West created a picnic area on his land which became known as West's Park. Eventually the land was sold off and subdivided into the City of West Park and later annexed to the City of Cleveland in 1923.
West Park has an wide range of architectural styles from which to choose. The styles range from ranches, split levels, Colonials, Tudors, doubles to bungalows. The age of the housing stock ranges from turn of the century to new construction in the 1990s. A tour through the tree-lined streets in different parts of West Park will reveal the solidness and variety of housing styles.
The main commercial districts are along Lorain Avenue, Rocky River Drive, Puritas, West 150th and West 140th Streets. Major shopping centers include Kamms Corner shopping area, which is currently undergoing renovation, Warren Road Shopping Center, along with centers at West 140th and Lorain and West 150th and Puritas. Most major retail needs can be met within the neighborhood.
Along the western edge of West Park lies the Rocky River Reservation of the Cleveland MetroParks. This reservation is in a valley through which runs the Rocky River. The park service allows for different activities including horseback riding, bike trails, picnic grounds and three public golf courses. Gunning Park, owned by the City of Cleveland, is being renovated and will include an olympic-sized swimming pool. Two institutions in West Park are the YMCA and Fairview General Hospital.
