Cleveland Heights is an urban suburb of approximately 50,000 residents located fifteen minutes east of downtown and minutes from University Circle—Cleveland’s cultural center. It is accessible from I-90 or I-271. The main east-west roads that run through Cleveland Heights include Monticello, Mayfield, Cedar and Fairmount.

The History of Cleveland Heights

A pioneer settlement in the early 1800’s, by the turn of the century Cleveland Heights was the country retreat of Cleveland’s wealthy. In the 1910s and 1920s, it was developed as a classic streetcar suburb whose boulevards were lined with historic mansions. Today it is known as a diverse, cosmopolitan suburb with a strong tradition of community involvement. Early residents were drawn to the area’s attractive geography—it sits at the top of the Portage Escarpment, the hill that rises up from Cleveland’s lake plains, and the Doan Brook, with its pretty shale banks, runs along its southern edge.

Housing includes bungalows, colonials, ranches, condos, duplexes and doubles in a wide range of sizes and prices. While much of the housing was built in the 1920’s, new townhouses and cluster homes have recently joined the mix. Severance Center is a re-developed mall that includes major retailers such as Home Depot.

Cleveland Heights is home to Cain Park—a summer entertainment complex featuring professional music, dance, theater and art. A newer community center has an Olympic size ice rink, a fitness center, a four-lane track and a senior activity center. Cleveland Heights is also home to many examples of fine, turn-of-the-century residential and commercial architecture. It also has plenty of green space, such as Forest Hill Park. Neighborhood shopping destinations include Coventry Road, known for its independent businesses, great restaurants, pedestrian-friendly streets and eclectic atmosphere.
