The History of University Circle

University Circle - Historc Sketch from the Cleveland Memory Project

In 1799, Nathaniel Doan—a member of an expedition of the Connecticut Land Company, opened a tavern on what is now East 107th and Euclid Avenue. The area became known as Doans Corners. In the late 1800s, both Western Reserve University and Case School of Applied Science moved to the area. By the early 1900s, land donations by Jeptha Wade and John D. Rockefeller allowed for the development of the regions other institutions. This area was the location of a streetcar turnaround in the late 1800s, which, along with the universities, gave it the name University Circle.
