The History of University Heights
University Heights was founded in the early twentieth century as Idlewood Village. Its name changed when John Carroll University—previously located on the west side—began a new campus on the east side. Today, University Heights is a diverse suburb featuring historic, well-kept homes.

City Amenities
Residents and visitors to University Heights enjoy its high-quality retail areas, including Fairmount Circle and Cedar Center. Cedar Center is located at the intersection of Cedar and Warrensville, and has been redeveloped. Redevelopment of the city has included the University Commons retail development at South Taylor and Cedar Road, and University Square—the region’s only two-story shopping plaza—which features a Macy’s, Target, Applebee’s and other chain stores.
University Heights is home to John Carroll University, one of the highest-ranked Jesuit universities in the Midwest. The community is also known for its historic homes and quiet, tree-lined streets. Its attractions include Purvis Park, which was redeveloped in 1995 to include a renovated swimming pool and recreation facilities.
